Yes, your Aer Lingus AerClub Avios do expire 36 months from their earned date if you have no activity on your account. Per the AerClub Terms and conditions page:

“If a Member has not earned or redeemed or purchased or transferred Avios for 36 consecutive months, all Avios that have been earned up to that date will expire and the Membership will automatically terminate in accordance with Clause 2.11.1.”

Activities That Reset Your Avios Expiration Clock

A wide range of activities counts toward resetting your Avios expiration clock. That includes earning Avios from:

Or reset your expiration date by using Avios to:

  • Pay for any Aer Lingus or Aer Lingus Regional flight booked through aerlingus.com
  • Book a reward flight with Aer Lingus, Iberia, or British Airways.
  • Upgrade your ticket to business class.

Reinstating Expired Avios

We could not find a definitive answer on whether it was possible to reinstate expired Avios. So, we called Aer Lingus and were told that it is not possible to reinstate expired Avios.

That means that it's even more critical to avoid the expiration of your AerClub Avios. Thankfully, with so many ways to extend your Avios validity, there should be no need to reinstate expired Avios.

Using Aer Lingus Avios

A glance at the Aer Lingus Award chart shows two clear sweet spots. However, with peak and off-peak pricing, you should only be looking for off-peak awards. One-way award in business class from the U.S. East coast to Ireland will set you back 50,000 Avios plus taxes and fees.

If you just want to get to Europe, then off-peak awards in economy from the East coast are a sweet deal at 13,000 Avios one way plus taxes and fees.

If you are on the other side of the country, the price increase is not major with off-peak business class awards in business Class on Aer Lingus from the West coast to Ireland, setting you back 62,500 Avios plus taxes and fees.

Boosting Your Aer Lingus Avios Balance

If you are a few Avios short of an award redemption, you can transfer options from a couple of different flexible point currencies to AerClub Avios. You can transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points to AerClub Avios at a ratio of 1:1 with a minimum transfer of 1,000 points. Or, you can also transfer American Express Membership Rewards to AerClub Avios at a ratio of 1:1 with a minimum transfer of 1,000 points.

One thing to keep in mind is that Aer Lingus shares its currency (Avios) with British Airways, Iberia, and Qatar Airways. You can move Avios between all programs free of charge. Avios transfer directly between Aer Lingus and British Airways or Iberia via Avios.com. However, you may have to transfer Avios via British Airways for Qatar Avios transfers.

Our Take

With one of the most generous expiration policies and a huge range of options to extend the validity of your Avios, AerClub members have no excuse to let your AerClub Avios Expire. If you can't earn or burn Avios for 36 months, remember you always have the option of transferring some credit card points or purchasing some Avios and extending the validity of your balance for another 36 months.
