Continuing what’s been a stellar start to the year for credit card welcome offers, Capital One just announced the return of the best bonus it’s ever offered on the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card. New cardmembers can now earn up to 100,000 bonus miles after meeting minimum spending requirements. This is an outstanding offer, and perfect for anyone chasing a simplified redemption strategy.

100,000 miles is worth $1,000 if you use points to pay yourself back for travel purchases. But, it's potentially worth much more if you transfer them to Capital One's airline and hotel partners.

Let’s dig into the details of the new Capital One Venture offer, and decide if this card deserves a place in your wallet.

Following the revamp of Capital One's rewards program and the addition of airline transfer partners, the Capital One Venture has catapulted into our list of top travel rewards cards. The ability to earn 2X miles on every purchase provides a decent return on spending. Plus the card offers some great perks.
  • Earn 100,000 Miles when you spend $20,000 on purchases in the first 12 months from account opening, or still earn 50,000 miles if you spend $3000 on purchases in the first 3 months; worth $600 in travel if redeemed for a fixed-value, or potentially much more when transferred to airline partners
  • 2 Miles on every purchase
  • Fee credit for Global Entry or TSA Pre✔® (up to $100)
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • $95 annual fee
  • 2 Miles per dollar on every purchase, every day.

New Capital One Venture Welcome Offer

To earn the full welcome bonus, you'll need to commit to spending $20,000 on your card over the first 12 months. $20,000 is a lot of spending. But, when you spread that out over the full year, you're looking at a managable average of $1,667 per month.

For comparison, the previous offer for this card was 60,000 miles after spending $3,000 in the first three months. Through this limited-time offer, you can still earn a 50,000-mile bonus after spending $3,000. But, you also have a chance to earn an extra 50,000 miles by spending $17,000 more (a total of $20,000) in your first year.

Keep in mind that the sign-up bonus is in addition to the 2X miles you'll earn from everyday purchases. After 12 months, you should have at least 140,000 miles which are worth at least $1,400 towards travel. If you spend exactly $20,000, you'll get a return of 7% on your spending for the year.

Here's a breakdown:

  • Earn 50,000 miles after spending $3,000 in the first three months.
  • Earn 50,000 miles after spending $20,000 (total) in the first year.
  • Earn 40,000 miles with 2X earning on everyday purchases.

If you're not sure if you can earn the full bonus (or you aren't willing to commit to $1,667 in monthly spending for a year), the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is a great alternative with an 80,000-point bonus earned in a shorter period of time without the high spending requirement.

Earn 2X Points on Every Purchase—Every Day

The majority of flexible rewards cards typically offer a range of bonus categories but only earn a single point per dollar on non-bonus spending. With the Capital One Venture card, you'll earn 2X miles for every dollar spent on all purchases, in every category. The only additional bonus category the card offers is 5X miles on hotel and car rental purchases made through Capital One Travel.

You can potentially earn more points using other cards that earn more than 2X points on select categories. But the Capital One Venture offers a simple way of building a substantial balance of rewards on everyday spending, without the need to organize an entire portfolio of cards.

Redeem Capital Miles for a Fixed-Value or Transfer to Travel Partners

Miles earned with your Capital One Venture give you the ultimate flexibility to redeem your rewards for travel, without locking you into a specific rewards program.

You can redeem miles for almost any travel expense at a fixed-value via Capital One’s Purchase Eraser feature. Simply pay with your Capital One Venture card, and you have up to 90 days from the date of purchase to redeem miles towards the purchase at a value of 1¢ per point.

Or, you could transfer Capital One miles to airline and hotel partners where you can potentially get even better returns. Transferring miles directly to a hotel or airline loyalty program means you can take advantage of any sweet spots within that specific program. With Capital One, you get to have a foot in both the fixed-value and transferable rewards camps, providing the ultimate flexibility.

I wonder what the bank cust experience is, don’t really know much abt it other than media publicity

@Jesica, I am not entirely sure what you are asking. But between my CapitalOne Venture Card and my 360 Accounts, I have never had anything less than friendly, efficient service when I contact them. I do dislike the “streamlined” website (the Desktop/Mobile/App versions basically look the same) which sometimes makes it difficult to find the right support/service item, but otherwise, I have no complaints.

Normally, I don’t think this card is worth it. There are other 2X cards with no annual fee on the market. But the signup bonus changes that equation.

  • Avatar

IMHO it’s not better than the 75K offer they had 3 years ago…

  • Avatar

Oof, that is a massive spend requirement ($20K) for the second 50k points….capital one is aiming a bit too high here I think…..

  • Avatar

Those bonus miles are totally worth the $95 annual fee. Some of the best value I’ve seen.

Applied and got rejected during my latest app-o-rama unfortunately. 🙁

This sounds like a great deal. I am very happy with my Venture Card. The best-ever bonus (maybe the best bonus ever for any card) was when they first introduced the card, they offered to match up to 100K miles from ANY single airline rewards program (lifetime miles earned, not current balance).

The Venture card is good for the sign up bonus only, nothing more. After that, get yourself a no-annual fee 2% card (DoubleCash, Fidelity, Apple Card, etc.). No need to pay a $95 AF for the same earning structure. Until the transfer partners become anything worth writing home about, they are a non-factor.
