If you're looking to boost your Hilton Honors account now to book a trip for once the travel world returns to normal, you're in luck. There are two tempting Hilton Honors promotions available now that you might want to consider.

First, American Express Membership Rewards is offering a 50% bonus on point transfers to Hilton Honors now through April 14, 2020. If that's not enough to top off your account balance, you can purchase Hilton Honors points through May 27, 2020 with a 100% bonus.

American Express Transfer Bonus Key Terms

  • Receive a 50% bonus when you transfer Membership Rewards points to Hilton Honors.
  • The transfer ratio with the bonus is 1,000:3,000.

Using Hilton Points

Due to Hilton's dynamic award pricing, it takes a bit of digging to find great deals with Hilton Honors. But there are some gems out there. On the budget side, we've found category 1 properties that yield over 1.2 cents per point in value.

Bear in mind that if you have elite status, you can use the 5th-night free benefit to extract even more value from your points. Getting Hilton Honors status is relatively easy as there are plenty of travel rewards cards offering Hilton elite status as a benefit. Cardholders of the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card receive complimentary Diamond status, and both  The Platinum Card® from American Express and Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card receive complimentary Gold status (Terms Apply).

Combining the 5th-night free on awards with some proper planning can prove very lucrative for your next Hilton stay—especially at a high-end property. For example, we were able to price out a 5-night stay at the Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort & Spa for as little as 80,000 per night for a stay in March 2021:

If there's an award that costs more points than you can compile from Membership Rewards transfers and buy-point promotions, remember that you can pool your Hilton Honors points with friends and family. Just remember to have the highest-tier elite book the award stay.

In the case of the Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort & Spa, Diamond elite members can hopefully snag a complimentary upgrade to one of the amazing overwater bungalows:

Speaking of elite status, Hilton just announced that it's extending elite status for a year. Even those that were supposed to lose elite status on March 31, 2020 have gotten a one-year reprieve. Meanwhile, those that earned elite status for 2020 will keep that status until March 31, 2022.

Our Take

While most travelers are grounded indefinitely, now is the time to start planning trips for when things return to normal. And there are plenty of great redemptions options currently available with Hilton—whether it's for late 2020 or into 2021.

Whether you choose to transfer Membership Rewards points, purchase points, or a combination of both will depend on how much value you can leverage from your Hilton points and if you have better uses of Membership Rewards points. While these promotions are available, now is a great time to start dreaming about a future trip.

Comments

  • A tip for anyone reading this – the Hilton Narita Airport is good value under this promotion, at 20k points most days, it is much cheaper usually to buy points than pay cash.

  • So we should plan for summer 2021 instead of 2020? That’s tragic.

  • Just utilized the transfer bonus from my american express card to my hilton account.
Hopefully travel will resume later in the summer so I can go on my planned vacation.

    • Even at 3:1 I don’t find the transfer to be beneficial. Maybe at 4:1 I’d think about it. I hope you have good plans for them though. 🙂

  • The long expiration date on the purchase promo tells you a lot about Hilton’s best case scenario for things to get back to normal.

I wonder how much redemption rates will come down, if at all?

  • At this point, I dont think it is a good idea to transfer points nor buy points since there is not a use for them. Anyway, Amex and Hilton runs this promo from time to time. Only transfer points when you have an actual usage for them in order to prevent devaluation.

  • Those having achieved higher status just weeks ago will enjoy the benefits till the end of 2022. Lucky them.

  • Hilton should temporarily lift the maximum point purchase limit.

    • They really should. They’re all so cash-strapped right now you’d think that they would allow more revenue for the time being.

  • As long as you’re booking well into 2021, I think this is a good enough deal, but not for this year. I wouldn’t risk it.

    • Agreed, I sadly don’t think international travel this whole year will be possible or desirable even if it is.

  • I think they gotta double the current bonuses for anyone to consider this at this time…

  • Wow. I just got the Surpass card to give me Gold status. I’m itching to try out for upgrades. This summer if I’m able to travel will probably end up being a great time to be upgrade by Hilton. Usually it’s not worth it to buy points with Hilton, this might be worth it to be able to take a lux trip. Still tempted to wait and see what else might pop up.

You could even have a family member do this and merge together the points.

  • Concur with above, in this turbulent time I want a bigger bonus – even if I need to reach spending amount for credit card bonus.

  • a bit off topic but it’s not possible to convert Hilton points to AA miles anymore?! maybe bug maybe not

  • I’ve been home a solid month now from vacation. I’m ready to book and be ready to fly the coop as soon as the travel band is lifted!
Ready for an awesome Hilton vacation!

  • Not the best time to buy speculatively and all my upcoming travel plans are on the cutting block. I expect we’ll see a lot of good deals when we get to the other side of this pandemic, though.
