Citi just launched a new offer on the Citi Premier® Card, raising the signup bonus to an incredible 80,000 points. This is a record offer for this card that should place it firmly on the radar of anyone looking for a new rewards card.

In addition to the stellar new bonus, the Citi Premier takes the top spot in our review of the best rewards cards for gas & fuel, earning 3X points per $1 spent on airfare and hotels and at gas stations, restaurants, and supermarkets.

When you factor in the $100 annual hotel credit every year, this is one of the best rewards cards available with an annual fee under $100.

Citi Premier® Card Signup Bonus

In addition to the stellar points-earning potential of the Citi Premier, Citi has launched a new all-time high offer on this card, boosting the bonus to 80,000 ThankYou Points after you spend $4,000 in purchases within the first 3 months of account opening That is 20K points higher than the previous 60K offer!

Redeem ThankYou Points for a Fixed-Value or Transfer to Airline Partners

As a Citi Premier cardholder, ThankYou Points are worth 1¢ per point towards travel when redeemed through the ThankYou Travel Center. You can redeem points for airfare, hotels, rental cars, cruises, and more. There are no blackout dates, and airline tickets are treated as revenue fares—meaning you'll earn both elite and redeemable miles. This gives the signup bonus a base value of $800 towards travel when redeemed through the Citi travel portal for a fixed value.

The most valuable way to redeem your ThankYou Points, however, is transferring them to Citi's airline partners.

Citi ThankYou transfer partners don't receive quite the same attention as rival programs Chase Ultimate Rewards or American Express Membership Rewards, but the program has some fantastic partners offering top value for your points.

For example, one of the best ways to book flights on United Airlines (and many Star Alliance airlines) is using Singapore KrisFlyer miles. You can book a round-trip, business-class ticket within the continental U.S. for 40,000 miles and a round trip to Hawaii for only 35,000 miles in economy or 60,000 in business class.

When thinking about booking United flights, many people assume Chase points are better since they transfer directly to United's MileagePlus program, but all three of these tickets cost fewer points if you transfer points to Singapore KrisFlyer than if you booked the same itinerary with United MileagePlus.

Points Earning Potential and Category Bonuses

The Citi Premier features a lucrative set of bonus categories, arguably the best earning structure of any mid-tier rewards card, including the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card.

Citi Premier bonus categories include:

  • 3X points per $1 spent on airfare, hotels, and at gas stations
  • 3X points per $1 spent on dining at restaurants, including cafes, bars and lounges
  • 3X points per $1 spent at supermarkets
  • 1X points per $1 spent on all other purchases

When paired with the Citi® Double Cash Card—which we think is one of the best personal rewards cards available for non-bonus spending—the combo will supercharge your earning strategy.

$100 Annual Hotel Savings Benefit

Outside of the huge earning potential of this card, it also offers an annual $100 hotel savings benefit. Once per calendar year, you can get $100 off a single hotel stay of $500 or more (excluding fees and taxes), through ThankYou.com. You're effectively getting ~20% off a cash hotel stay of $500.

Citi Premier Retail and Travel Protection Benefits

Unfortunately, Citi announced dramatic changes to retail and travel benefits in 2019, including the removal of almost all travel and purchase protections across almost all Citi cards.

The Citi Premier retained extended warranty coverage and purchase protection but lost many of its benefits including:

  • Car Rental Insurance
  • Trip Cancellation & Interruption Protection
  • Travel Accident Insurance
  • Trip Delay Protection
  • Baggage Delay Protection
  • Lost Baggage Protection
  • Citi® Price Rewind
  • Return Protection
  • Missed Event Ticket Protection
  • Roadside Assistance Dispatch Service
  • Travel & Emergency Assistance

Application Restrictions

Citi dishes up a somewhat complex set of application restrictions that can have a significant impact on your ability to get ThankYou Rewards earning cards. Rules include:

  • Maximum of one (1) personal card per eight days
  • Maximum two (2) total cards per 65 days
  • Maximum one (1) business card per 95 days
  • You can only receive the signup bonus if you haven't opened or closed a ThankYou Rewards earning card in the previous 24 months.

Bonus ThankYou® Points are not available if you received a new cardmember bonus for Citi Rewards+℠, Citi ThankYou® Preferred, Citi ThankYou®Premier/Citi Premier℠ or Citi Prestige®, or if you have closed any of these accounts, in the past 24 months.

Final Thoughts

The Citi Premier® Card is a reward-focused card that will help you earn the maximum number of points possible from your spending. While it's light on big-ticket benefits, the high points earning rate still makes it a great standalone travel card with a modest annual fee.

The increased 80,000-point offer provides enough points for a round-trip business class flight to Hawaii, with 20K points left over for future travel. Plus, you can take advantage of great category bonuses to earn valuable points that transfer to a variety of airline partners.

  • Citi has always been my favourite card, and with bonus like this, it will always be

  • Thanks for this update. Shame about the loss of the car insurance protection. That alone was worth it for me. I will have to rethink this card now.

  • This is one of the best bonus offers I´ve ever seen

  • First look, most of the transfer partners would not be very helpful. However, your information regarding Singapore airlines is making this interesting. The 3 times points on supermarkets and gas stations is interesting, until realizing that as a Mastercard, it can not be used at Costco, where most of my gas purchases and a good chunk of my grocery spending happens. That said, holding this card for a few years or more may make sense with the bonus offered, especially if the minimum spending to get the bonus is substantially in the 3X categories.

  • Is this recommended for under 5/24?

    • If you’re under 5/24, I’d recommend looking at any Chase cards you may want first. In particular, the Sapphire Preferred 100K is a clear winner over Citi Premier, but there are also some great Chase cobrand and business cards worth considering. Since Citi Premier is a personal card, it will count against your 5/24 standing.

  • I have kept this card since late 2017, and made Citi prestige in early 2020. To be eligible for sign-up bonus according to Citi rule, alas, I gotta wait till early 2022, even closing neither of them. Grrrrr…

  • RoseMarie says:

If you collecy citi points this is a great deal. I like chase ultimate rewards for flexibility and this offer is not enough to make me switch,

  • Great offer on a great card….Citi is working hard to catch up to AMEX and Chase….they just need to add some sort of legitimate Hotel partner and it would really really help if we could transfer points to AA and get some fair mileage rate in return….don’t understand why AA doesn’t partner with a points program like United (Chase) and Delta (AMEX)….they leave a lot of money on the table by not linking up with Citi points.

  • Rejected with 825 scores for having too many revolving LoC i.e. Chase credit cards.
    Ditto for the wife.

  • I’d forgotten all about Citi. lol Literally not once since COVID started becoming a thing have I thought about or read about a Citi card.

  • Great timing! I’m in the market for a new card. 🙂

  • Fenspinbi says:

The Prestige is already dead (or MIA), and the Premier is about to be clobbered by the (possible) refresh on the Sapphire Preferred. The earning gap is easily closed with a 2-Freedom setup (Freedom/Flex & Freedom Unlimited). They’ve a long way to go to make this card even remotely competitive, especially right now.

    • I’m not sure the CSR refresh is a positive thing so that would actually move Citi closer to it. Again, in my opinion.

  • Craig Gillhaus says:

$95 Annual Fee is due up front according to terms. Annual fee – $95.

  • arshi007 says:

This is definitely a solid offer. The SUB market is totally heating up. Unfortunately I got this card a few months back when the offer was 60k points so missed out on this one.

The Citi Premier is certainly a useful card to have – its sort of my backup card for everything (grocery, travel, dining) when AmEx is not accepted.
