This Alaska Miles Purchase promotion has ended, however, you can still purchase Alaska miles.

In general, purchasing miles does not represent a good value for money, but every so often when airlines and hotel chains offer bonus miles on purchases, purchasing miles can become a far more attractive proposition. Currently, Alaska Airlines is running a promotion giving up to 40% bonus miles on miles’ purchases.

Alaska Mileage Plan Up to 40 Percent Bonus Purchase

The Offer

The offer is valid through April 6, 2017. It is tiered, and you will only receive the 40% bonus on purchases of 30,000 miles or more. The bonus levels are as follows:

  • 10,000 – 19,000 miles: 20% bonus
  • 20,000 – 29,000 miles: 30% bonus
  • 30,000 – 60,000 miles: 40% bonus

To maximize your value, you will need to purchase at least 30,000 miles to pick up an additional 12,000 miles’ bonus. The miles will cost you $825, a price of 2 cents per mile. Sadly, the way Alaska has priced the miles, you don’t get any better value whether you purchase 30,000 or 60,000 miles. The cost is a set 2 cents per mile.

Price $825 $1,100 $1,375 $1,650
Miles 30,000 40,000 50,000 60,000

Total miles 42,000 56,000 70,000 84,000

The key terms of the offer are as follows:

  • The offer is valid until 8:59 PM PT on April 6, 2017
  • Purchases are processed by Points.com and cost $27.50 per 1,000 miles + a 7.5% Federal Excise Tax
  • Purchased miles do not count towards MVP and MVP/Gold Status

If you want to join Alaska's Mileage Plan program to benefit from this offer, be aware that new Alaska Mileage accounts cannot purchase, transfer, gift, or swap miles for a period of 10 days from the date of opening their account. This is a fraud prevention measure on the part of the airline, and if you are affected you can call the customer care line.

Depending on your future travel plans there is some great value to be had here. While it is typically not recommended to purchase miles speculatively, with some concrete travel plans and a 40% bonus you can pick up quite the bargain, and don’t forget that now you can redeem Alaska miles on Virgin America with some interesting pricing options. You can also check out some award sweet spots with Alaska Airlines.
