April was a mixed month for Alaska Airlines; they announced the huge $2.6 billion Virgin America takeover and maintained a top 5 Airline Ranking in the Airline Quality Rating report with the lowest recorded complaints of any U.S. Airline.

But they also made a proper dogs breakfast of the Emirates First Class devaluation when they delivered it without notice, right after another big points sale with a 40% bonus, angering a lot of loyalty members. And there has been a mixed response so far to the Virgin America takeover with speculation Alaska paid too much in the bidding war with JetBlue and questions about the two operations compatibility.

Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan Bonus SaleThat said, Alaska Mileage Plan points value at roughly 2 cents and this deal will let you purchase unlimited miles (in blocks of 60,000) at 1.97 cents per mile.

That's real value for airline mile purchases. Although, keep in mind that with as the payment processor, purchased miles will not count towards airfare bonuses when booked on a credit card.

Also, only allows for up to four purchases in a 30 day period per credit card. If you intend on buying bulk points, you will need to spread the cost across cards.

Why Would You Buy Mileage Plan Miles At 50% Bonus?

If you are close to redeeming an award and need the extra points to get you over the line, even if you are only halfway to the award you want to redeem. The numbers will add up pretty sharp if you are working on the right flight.

Alaska has a large stable of airline partners across multiple programs and points redeem well on most of those partners, excepting maybe Emirates First Class…

Mileage Plan also allows you to book one-way awards flights on the majority of partner airlines, and those one-way flights can include a stopover.

I would still be exercising caution before buying points even with this bonus. Have a plan and only buy points you intend to use in the immediate or near future.

Alaska may well have learned its lesson from the customer backlash when they devalued Emirates First Class, but it's hard to trust that Alaska will do the right thing by loyalty members following the Emirates debacle and the ensuing blame game where Alaska leveled responsibility at ‘travel hackers.'

If you plan to use the points straight away go for it, if not, it might be worth giving this one a miss.
