Through September 18, 2023, you can buy Finnair Plus points for as low as 0.69¢ each. Finnair allows you to buy a maximum of 200,000 points every year, so to maximize this promotion, you could end up with a total of 400,000 miles.
But are Finnair Plus points worth that cost? Here's a closer look at this promotion and Finnair Plus redemption rates to help you decide.
Promotion To Buy Finnair Points
This promotion from Finnair offers a 40%–100% bonus on purchased points. This is a tiered promotion, offering a higher bonus the more points you purchase.
Here's a look at the tiers for this deal:
- 5,000–19,000 points: 40% bonus
- 20,000–49,000 points: 60% bonus
- 50,000–99,000 points: 80% bonus
- 100,000–200,000 points: 100% bonus
You will be able to see the bonus when you proceed to buy points in the Finnair Shop.

Per the terms and conditions, points will be deposited within 72 hours of purchase. However, data points from AwardWallet users show that points purchases are processed immediately.
Is It Worth It?
Your total out-of-pocket costs if you buy the maximum number of points will be 2,575 euros. That's approximately $2,760 USD. With the 100% bonus, this will give you 400,000 points at a price of just 0.69¢ each.
But ultimately, it depends on the redemptions you'll make with your Finnair points. To get an idea of what you can do with Finnair Plus points, here is the award redemption chart for Finnair flights after their most recent devaluation:
When buying Finnair Plus points at 0.69¢ each, you can expect to pay:
- 20,000 points (costing you $138) + €31.77 in fees one-way for economy anywhere within Europe
- 30,000 points (costing you $207) + €31.77 in fees one-way for business class anywhere within Europe
- 95,000 points (costing you $656) + $112.50 in fees one-way for business class between North America and Europe
- 95,000 points (costing you $656) + €136.77 fees one-way for business class between Europe and Asia
Region definitions:
- Northern Europe: Bergen, Copenhagen, Gdansk, Gothenburg, Krakow, Oslo, Reykjavik, Riga, Stockholm, Tallinn, Tromsø, Vilnius, Visby, Warsaw, and all flights within Finland.
- Europe: Includes Tel Aviv
Each Finnair partner has a different award chart, unfortunately. Some redemptions can be great, while others can be…meh. Note that award bookings with Finnair points can only include travel on one partner (plus connections on Finnair). For example, you can't have a British Airways flight and an American Airways flight on the same award itinerary using Finnair Plus points.
Some items to note are that Finnair Plus points expire after 18 months of inactivity and Finnair will adopt Avios sometime in 2024. Finnair Plus points will transition to Avios at a 3:2 ratio.
Say you buy 150,000 Finnair Plus points (or 300,000 after the 100% bonus), that means you'd end up with 200,000 Avios after the transition. Assuming there are no changes to announced plans, that's effectively buying Avios for 1.03 cents each. However, with constant loyalty program devaluations, we don't think this would be the best strategy.
Maximize Your Purchase
Like many other loyalty programs, Finnair partners with Points.com to sell points. Thus, it won't code as a travel or airfare purchase, so use one of these cards to maximize your earnings:
- Any credit card where you're working on a sign-up bonus. These are the best welcome offers available right now.
- Any credit card with perks you can unlock from spending, such as hotel free night awards, hotel elite status, or airline elite status.
- Your best credit card for everyday spending, such as the Citi Double Cash® Card or Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card.

Get Finnair Plus Points Without Buying
Instead of buying Finnair points, you could transfer your Capital One miles to Finnair Plus at a 1:1 ratio (with a minimum transfer of 1,000 miles). Most transfers process immediately.
Our Take
This promotion is better than the last offer to buy Finnair Plus Points, which only allowed a 100% bonus on the first 10 million points sold. This deal allows anyone to buy the annual maximum of 200,000 points, which will yield a total of 400,000 points after the bonus.
Finnair points have limited uses, especially as you can't add more than one partner to an award booking. That said, the opportunity to buy Finnair Plus points at 0.69¢ each is a fraction of a cent more than the lowest price we've seen from Finnair — thanks to the 100% bonus through September 18.

Since this years promotion does not grant status, I’d very much prefer they just make it straightforward, not tiered. I’d be in at 100%, probably even at 75% , but not at 40%. Sounds like a fairly small number of people could get access to the best deals
Do you know if we can extend the expiration of the points beyond 18 months?
Yes! All you need to do is earn or redeem points every 18 months to extend their validity.
Interesting and fairly inexpensive way to get one world status since the points you buy are still worth something. But then you are going to need to use your finnair number everytime you fly to get these benefits and accumulate even more finnair miles unless you change it each time at the gate after check in and lounge visit.
Very interesting promotion and would be much more interesting if not for the uncertainty still looming over European travel.
This might be a great deal if you really want to gain status on One World. But, is this status good for just one year, or? I am not certain if I would use the points or the status enough to make it worthwhile; especially with the COVID still floating around and countries opening and closing their borders to travel.
It is a good deal, if you want to gain status with Finair. However, It does not seem that Finair has many of the routes I would be traveling on. So, I will pass on this.
