When Should You Buy IHG Points?
Buying points or miles doesn’t always make sense. Loyalty programs like IHG often sell points at prices higher than what most members can redeem them for. These sales generate significant revenue for the program but usually offer poor value for travelers. However, promotions like this one can narrow or even eliminate that gap.
That said, there are two main times when buying points can make sense:
- When buying points is cheaper than paying cash. Compare the hotel’s nightly cash rate to its award rate. Multiply the number of points required by 0.5¢ each (the effective cost during a 100% bonus). If that total is lower than the cash price, you’ll save money by buying points and redeeming them. Because IHG uses dynamic pricing, this won’t always work, but sometimes the difference is big enough to make it worthwhile.
- When you need to top off your account for a specific redemption. If you’re just a few points short of having enough for a stay, buying points can be more economical than paying cash for one or more nights. This can be especially true at upscale properties or during peak travel periods when cash rates surge.

Maximizing Your IHG Points Purchase
IHG point purchases are processed by Points.com — not IHG directly. That means buying points here won't count as a travel or hotel purchase, so you'll likely want to use your best card for everyday spending, such as the Citi Double Cash® Card or the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card.
Alternatively, any card where you're working on a sign-up bonus is also a good choice. These are the best welcome offers available now if you're looking for a new card.

Other Ways to Earn IHG Points
Instead of buying IHG points, you can use two types of transferable points currencies to boost your balance for an upcoming redemption:
However, the relatively low value of IHG One Rewards points versus other transfer partners and the 1:1 base transfer rate make these non-ideal options. Why transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points to IHG points (0.68¢ average redemption rate) when you can transfer those points to World of Hyatt (2.19¢ average redemption rate)?
A better way to earn IHG points if you don't need them urgently is through co-branded IHG credit cards. You can earn welcome bonuses and points from daily spending with any of these cards:
- IHG One Rewards Traveler Credit Card: Earn 80,000 Bonus Points after spending $2,000 on purchases within the first 3 months of account opening. ($0 annual fee)
- IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card: Earn 140,000 Bonus Points after spending $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening ($99 annual fee)
- IHG One Rewards Premier Business Credit Card: Earn 140,000 Bonus Points after spending $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. ($99 annual fee)
- Earn 140,000 Bonus Points
- Enjoy an Anniversary Free Night at IHG Hotels & Resorts. Plus, enjoy a fourth reward night free when you redeem points for a consecutive four-night IHG® hotel stay.
- Earn up to 26 total points per $1 spent when you stay at IHG Hotels & Resorts
- Earn 5 points per $1 spent on purchases on travel, at gas stations, and restaurants. Earn 3 points per $1 spent on all other purchases
- Automatic Platinum Elite status as long as you remain a Premier cardmember
- Global Entry, TSA PreCheck® or NEXUS Statement Credit of up to $120 every 4 years as reimbursement for the application fee charged to your card
- IHG One Rewards Bonus points are redeemable at Hotels & Resorts such as InterContinental®, Crowne Plaza®, Kimpton®, EVEN® Hotels, Indigo® Hotels & Holiday Inn®
- Member FDIC
- Rates & Fees
- Earn up to 26 points total per $1 spent when you stay at an IHG hotel
- 5X points per $1 spent on purchases on travel, gas stations, and restaurants
- 3X points per $1 spent on all other purchases
The earning for spending at IHG hotels breaks down as follows:
- Earn 10X points for being a IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card member
- Earn up to 6X points from IHG® with Platinum Elite Status, a benefit of having this card
- Earn up to 10X points from IHG® for being an IHG® One Rewards member (Being a cardholder is not required to earn this bonus for participating in the IHG® loyalty program)
You can also earn IHG points on stays. Plus, you may be able to earn a sizable chunk of points when maximizing current IHG promotions.

Bottom Line
This 100% bonus points promotion is the standard offer for buying IHG points — but it still ties the best rate the program has ever offered. If you can find outsized value from IHG points, consider grabbing some during this promotion. This promotion is set to end on November 26, 2025.
There are many times when it's cheaper to buy points than pay cash for a hotel room, and we provided some supporting examples of how you can grab a luxury property for a solid discount. Make sure to check the points price for your upcoming hotel stays. Multiply that by 0.5¢ (100% bonus) per point and see if buying the necessary points would be cheaper than paying for your hotel room with cash.
