The IHG PointBreaks promotion has been extended, please see more details here.

IHG has announced its hotel list for the revamped PointBreaks Promo for Q1 2018. Last week we reported on the changes coming to the promo and the introduction of 10,000 and 15,000 points per night redemptions. This quarter’s promo is valid for stays through April 30, 2018. The new list is an improvement on previous versions, which had suffered from a distinct lack of quality in the properties available.

  • IHG has introduced 3 tiers of PointBreaks properties costing 5,000, 10,000, and 15,000 points

This quarter’s list is far more impressive in terms of the quality of the properties on offer, with 10 InterContinental hotels making the list while there were none in previous quarters.

Points & Cash Bookings

The introduction of points and cash bookings could end up being quite a valuable perk depending on your choice of property. Take for example the Crowne Plaza Syracuse, which would set you back 15,000 points for the promo or $130.66 cash per night.

IHG PointBreaks Price Comparison Q1 2018 Hotel

Using the points & cash option, you can pay $50 and 10,000 points, or $80 and 5,000 points. While this is an expensive way to buy IHG points, effectively buying points for 1 cent or 0.8 cents a piece, it nevertheless has increased the value of IHG Points purchases promotions. Keep in mind, you *should* be able to purchase points at a better price, even when there aren't purchase promotions — just do some digging on other Points & Cash bookings.

Maximizing The Promotion And Earning IHG Points

The offer on the IHG® Rewards Club Select Credit Card is no longer available through this site. Instead, check out the review of IHG's new premium rewards card.

You can maximize your earnings and the value of this promotion by using the IHG® Rewards Club Select Credit Card. Cardholders receive an automatic 10% rebate on points redemptions (up to 100k/year), which means you will end up with a net cost of 4,500 points per night on a 5,000 point booking. Currently, the card has a 60,000-point signup bonus; enough for up to 13 nights (after you get the 10% rebate) depending on your property choice using the PointBreaks promotion.

The card comes with complimentary Platinum Elite status with IHG Rewards Club, as well as a handful of other benefits. Even without the promotion, IHG does have some excellent sweet spots for award redemptions that are well worth having a look at.

Our Take

Whether this revamp adds value or not will depend on how IHG behaves in the long run. The list for this quarter is impressive in comparison to what we've seen recently.

If the trend continues, then IHG has added some nice value to PointBreaks. If on the other hand, this is just a sweetener for the first quarter to take the edge of the price hike, then like a lot of other loyalty program changes this revamp would be a bust.

  • Oh, this is awesome! Great guide.

  • Thanks for the heads up. I wasn’t aware of this availability.

  • great guide but the selection is abysmal. people are saying RIP pointbreak.

    • I don’t know. Sure, 5k points across the board may be dead, but if 10k and 15k options become available and we still see a 50%+ savings, it is certainly a better than nothing option.

      • It is – hopefully there will be some nice IC’s next time – and it would be cool, if one could book better rooms with these

  • We have to admit that points and miles devalue, so this list is much, much better than several previous ones. But you mentioned, the change is only good if the quality doesn’t drop in the next editions.

  • Better than recent offerings, even if at 10K or 15K.

  • Revamped is a good word between improved and devalued.

  • In my opinion this is a good change.
It is 2-3 years I’m not able any more to book via this promo.
I had a lot of hotel room already booked so I hope to take profit next round.

  • The_Bouncer says:

This is a huge devaluation. The 5k list has shrunk to a third of what was previously available.

The 10k and 15k lists comprise mainly properties where prevailing cash rates are $100 or less, or where there are plentiful options at those points levels every day.

  • I’ll wait another quarter before deciding whether IHG pointsbreak is dead to me. This list isn’t very useful. However, I have taken advantage to pointsbreaks in 2017.

  • Unfortunately I’ve never been able to benefit from any Pointsbreak offerings, ever.

  • I’ve finally found a PointsBreaks deal that works for me. However, at 10 000 Points, it’s not cheaper than some regular points hotels. So I’m not sure if I’m impressed with this revamped program or not.

  • Some of the intercontinental properties look like reasonably good values

  • I am disappointed that there are no Australian or New Zealand properties. Difficult to get excited when the nearest offerings are so far away and the time frame too short if long international flights are needed. I have used Pointbreaks in the past for impromptu short breaks and as a result have returned to places and hotels I might not otherwise. I see this as an opportunity for individual hotels to gain new customers as well as to fill vacant rooms.

  • I’m looking to use some points for a 4july stay. So at least I have a while to build some more up. I hope to take advantage of IHG more in the future but Hilton is just right where I go somehow. It’s like they know and are nudging…well more like just telling me I’m staying with them! lol! Does IHG have more off the beaten path hotels in popular areas? Or do they have less hotels than Hilton and therefore less chance of picking them? I hope you know what I’m trying to ask :\ You know a womans mind is hard to navigate but I’m sure you can get the gist ;o)

  • I was hoping to see more desirable properties.

  • It would be great if there was a long list of top hotels at 5000 points. The reality is though that the list has been getting shorter and the hotels featured were generally in undesirable locations. At least adding 10000 and 15000 options has brought some better hotels in better locations.

  • IHG does not have a fantastic elite member benefits, but these points breaks and accelerate promotions make me stay in their properties quite a lot. Collecting IHG points is still quite attractive, I hope they improve Spire elite benefits, as the top level befits are joke in comparison to e.g. Hilton Diamond benefits.
BTW. I booked Crowne Pazza Venice, Italy for 15000 point/night on this season points brake. It is not in the centre, but a good 25 min. train connection is available.
