Chase Ultimate Rewards has announced a promotion offering cardmembers a 30% bonus on Ultimate Rewards transfers to British Airways, from now until June 16, 2019. This is the first-ever transfer bonus from Chase. To access the promotion, all you need to do is log into your Chase Ultimate Rewards account to see it.

Key Terms

  • Promotion is valid on transfers through June 16, 2019, 11:59 p.m. ET.
  • Receive a 30% bonus when you transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points to British Airways Avios.
  • You will receive 1,300 Avios points for every 1,000 Ultimate Rewards points you transfer.

One thing to note about the promotion is that the bonus is applied on the British Airways end of the transfer. On the Ultimate Rewards transfer page, Chase states the following:

“Bonus Avios will be awarded by British Airways in your British Airways Executive Club account when your transfer is complete.”

This has led some to question whether the 30% bonus will post instantly like most Chase to British Airways transfers. We tested this out with one of our own accounts and the expected number of points—including the 30% bonus—was available instantly. However, even transfers that are normally instant are occasionally delayed.

If your points don't post right away, AwardWallet's new Balance Watch feature can save you from the insanity of sitting at your computer and refreshing your account. We'll notify you by email and push notification as soon as your transfer posts. Fortunately, delays seem to be rare. The longest transfer time recorded by the Balance Watch during this promo has been two hours.

Using Your Avios

If you want to take advantage of one of our favorite British Airways sweet spots this promotion can be quite lucrative. Zone 2 awards are a great option, and you can grab a flight between U.S. destinations and the Caribbean in business class for as little as 15,000 Avios on flights operated by American Airlines.

If you are a British Airways aficionado, the British Airways Visa Signature® Card is currently offering a mega signup bonus: Earn up to 100,000 bonus Avios. Earn 50,000 bonus Avios after you spend $3,000 on purchases within the first 3 months from account opening. Plus earn an additional 50,000 bonus Avios after you spend $20,000 on your purchases within your first year of account opening..

However, unless you already have the complete lineup of Chase Ultimate Rewards cards, you'd be far better off earning flexible points that can transfer to a dozen airline and hotel partners. Our top personal-card picks are the Chase Sapphire Reserve® or Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card. If you're looking for a small-business card, you can't go wrong with the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card.

Our Take

It is great to see Chase finally getting in on the transfer-bonus game. If you have an immediate use for Avios points, this promotion could be valuable. Even if this transfer offer isn't a good fit for your upcoming travel plans, the first-ever transfer bonus from Chase is great news. Hopefully, this will turn out to be the first of many bonuses on transfers to Ultimate Rewards partners.

  • Use the quick!

  • Elizabeth says:

I do not transfer speculatively, but a bonus is a definite plus if you were going to transfer anyway.

  • solid transfer bonus, worth a look

  • This is a nice little boost in BA miles.

  • bulstrode says:

Good news, going to transfer my Chase points to book winter AA flight to Caribbean. Thanks

  • This is good if you have a redemption in mind. Remember that Avios is devaluing soon for partner redemptions.

  • euromannn says:

Problem as Award wallet has previously announced is effective May 31, 2019, BA will announced changes in AVIOS point redemption.

Obviously it will cost MORE to fly with AVIOS program so adding 30% transfer from UR is nice may offset BA increases.

  • euromannn says:

British Airways on May 31, 2019 will announce INCREASES to AVIOS Award travel.
Thus chase UR 30% transfer will help but may be too late.

  • Avios are a path I have not gotten to utilize yet, thanks for the info.

  • Need to transfer some so my points dont expire

  • BA transfer bonus is awesome! hoping to see some Virgin ones next!

  • Another example of how much more beneficial the US credit cards are…

  • Steven William Van Meter says:

Not sure if this is a good fit for your upcoming travel plans, but worth looking into.

  • miskocina says:

Just remember that this is an imminent devaluation of Avios for non-AIG airline redemptions (for example AA, CX, QR rewards). Check how this might affect your plans before transferring points!

  • Thanks for the info. Is there a limit on the number of miles that I can transfer for the bonus ?

  • Wow…. Chase is finally getting it’s head into the game and starting to get competetive

  • Important for readers to note, on the BA card offer included in the post: that card also earns the Travel Together Ticket, which , if used for a premium cabin award redemption would effectively double the value of the 120k Avios earned when maxing out the card offer.

  • Nice to finally see a bonus with them.

  • Wow I hope Chase will introduce transfer promotions to their other partners as well.
    That’ll be great!!

  • Maryjane says:

A transfer bonus for Avios is great. Still not a good idea to do so without an immediate use for them but this is a trend that I hope continues.

  • Isn’t there a BA devaluation coming soon? I agree that Chase UR giving bonus is good news for consumers, but do experts think transferring to BA is good option?

  • The first ever bonus is news to me.

  • Glad Chase is starting to offer transfer bonuses

  • Be aware there is an upcoming devaluation of Avios.

  • charles j says:

Then I can use the points on BA partners also. I have to consider it.

  • Steven William Van Meter says:

So, if you earn 4 Avios for every dollar spent on all purchases within your first year up to $30,000- you could earn up to 120,000 points. Nice

  • Liu Sheng says:

I’m not sure if it’s the right time to transfer since BA avios is suffering from devaluation these days.

  • In the foreseeable future, the flexible points are / will be the best.

  • Steven William Van Meter says:

I like the premium cabin award option.

  • Bogdan Dimitrescu says:

It would be great to see this kind of transfer bonus for other airlines also, including American Airlines.

  • Scott N Roberts says:

This is a great development. I’m hoping to see it develop into a bonus point war.

  • I hope this bodes well for potential future bonus transfers to their other partners!

  • Stacy Liu says:

I’m excited they’re doing the transfer bonus for BA and hopefully in the future for others. Will be looking into flights for some summer and fall travels and hope they coincide well!

  • This is great news. Hope they continue to provide offers like this.

  • Need to book a flight here soon, so this is a welcome bonus!

  • The_Bouncer says:

Beware of the pending devaluation before transferring anything to BA.

  • Just opened CSP and working on spend right now. Excited to take advantage of things like this in the near future!

  • Love this! I agree with others. I hope to see this expand to other partners. It would be wonderful if Chase was competitive with Amex on this. Too bad we don’t know from Chase whether or not it’s an ongoing thing.
Now if Chase would only add American as a partner! It would make Chase pretty indispensable to me.

  • This promotion is still going on and is a nice bonus for short trips on American Airlines using Avios points.

  • This is better than previous AMEX bonus transfers to BA

  • MIchellesf says:

Planning to transfer to get the bonus tomorrow. Will increase my chase rewards points from 40,000 to over 50,000 Avios giving me 2 round trip tickets on Alaska to Hawaii at 25,000 Avios each (booking for Jan 2020). Thrilled!

  • Have the fees always been so bad when booking on AA transatlantic? I thought if you avoided LHR they weren’t so bad…..but I was wrong.

  • linda zynger says:

Yes. BA fees for booking an award are atrocious compared to using AA miles. It is sometimes almost equal to a paid ticket.

  • Vanessa Higasi says:

Lets hope Chase has many more transfer bonuses like this!

  • I think with the upcoming BA partner devaluation it would be very risky to take up this offer just yet.

  • I’m relieved that this month’s BA partner devaluation was minimal. This transfer bonus is still a good deal.

  • You can find great advantage to being a BA loyalist. I try to keep many of my redemption for only international. Best usage of the points.

  • I don’t know what to think. On the surface it sounds good, but now I’m not so sure. Will have to do more research.
