AA is running a promotion where you can earn up to a 30% bonus for transferring Starpoints to AAdvantage miles. The promotion is valid through October 15, 2017, and provides some excellent value since it stacks with Starw5,000-mile0 mile bonus for transfers of 20,000 Starpoints or more.

How It Works

  • Promotion is valid through October 15, 2017
  • Earn a 20% bonus on all transfers
  • Earn an additional 10,000 miles bonus when you transfer 100,000 miles

The way the transfers are set up, you effectively get 30,000 miles for every 20,000 Starpoints you transfer. It breaks down as follows:

  • 20,000 Starpoints = 25,000 AAdvantage miles with the Starwood 5,000 bonus
  • 25,000 miles + 20% for the promotion = 30,000 miles

Once you transfer 80,000 Starpoints you will receive 130,000 miles since this will trigger the additional 10,000 bonus for transfers over 100,000 miles.

Better Option For Your Starpoints

While the offer is tempting there is some better value to be had for your Starpoints if you are looking to make a substantial transfer. You are better off transferring 90,000 Starpoints to Marriott at a ratio of 1:3 which will give you 270,000 points. Using the Marriott Hotel + Airfare packages you would then receive seven nights in a category 1-5 hotel, as well as 120,000 AAdvantage miles.

While this route involves using 10,000 more Starpoints and receiving slightly fewer AA miles (120,000 instead of 130,000), it is still far more valuable since you will pick up an additional seven nights stay at a category 1-5 Marriott property.

Alternative Options to Earn AA Miles

Sadly, AA is not a transfer partner of any of the major credit card reward programs. So, if you need to transfer some points for a redemption, your only option may be using Starpoints. However, before you part with your valuable Starpoints, you should consider one of AA’s Co-branded credit cards which have relatively generous signup bonuses. Cards include but are no way limited to the following:

This is a tricky deal to get the most out of and ultimately will depend on your needs and travel patterns. If you are looking for a small number of miles to hit that great redemption, then this offer is reasonable value and your only transfer option. If on the other hand, you are looking to make a substantial transfer, then going down the Marriott Hotel + Air packages route will provide you with more value.

  • Hi, dou you know if I can transfers pint from LATAM to AAdvantage right know? Im glad if you know.

    Best Regards

  • I find SPG pts too valuable to give up for AA. Even with a bonus, they seem like better redemption at the W some place.

  • It looks like the minimum transfer would be of 2,500 Starpoints based on SPG preferred status only. Which would be fine if I needed more AA miles and didn’t find Startpoints so valuable.

  • I am still the about the value of the SPG vs Marriott and am in limbo with my points. Maybe I should finally just transfer them to Marriott.

    • Paul, it all depends on what you’re looking to do with your points. I’ve been moving back and forth and have redeemed for both SPG and Marriott since the linking of accounts.

  • Not having a lot of SPG points the only possibility for me is to transfer 20000 SPG points in order to receive 30000 AAdvantage miles.
Not a bad deal I would say.
